XJ axles

I've read the specs etc on this site and others, and i'm just trying to figure out exactly which axles mine have, i'm guessing the front is a dana 30and the back is either a dana or a chrysler? it's a stock 99 XJ classic 4.0l, I don't know if the manual would have it but mine doesn't have one anyway. Thanks

Look at the diff cover (not the bolt pattern)

if it has round sides but is flat on the top and bottom, it's the 8.25 with 29 splines. If it's a full oval (no flat spots) then it's the d35.

And your Jeep could have come with either... Usually if you have the d35 you also have limited slip. Which is good and bad. It's nice until it fails you on a trail I should say. Great way to test is if you put it in nuetral, jack one rear tire up and try spinning. If it spins freely and turns the driveshaft, your open. If it's tough to turn then you have limited slip. just useless info for ya.

I don't think you are correct. The Trac-Lok limited slip in the D35 was an extra cost option or part of an extra cost option package such as the UpCountry option group. Most D35's are open differential.

When the limited slip wears out there is no harm or impairment to your axle, it just no longer does its job. It is better than an open differential, but not as good as other aftermarket limited slips or locking differentials.

This is just what I have heard with late model cherokee's. And you are right, it doesn't do any harm. Unless you are on the side of a hill and need that one tire to grab and it just won't do it. Then you pick up your broken pride and drive backwards down a steep loose hillside trying not to roll... ask me how I know this.

8.25 was also optioned with the trac-lok. It just depends on what that one was optioned for.

Your 99 is a late model build, so the dealer may be able to get you a build sheet that contains what it came with.

Actually you want to look at the shape of the diff housing, not the diff cover.

You can tell a D35 cover from an 8.25" cover though because the factory 8.25" cover has a raised lip around the outer edge of the mounting flange.

Also, if you have ABS you def. have the d35. That's just a quick way to know, if you don't have ABS it could be either one.

I tell by the shape because it's the easiest thing to look at when you stick your head under the Jeep without getting dirty. It's exactly as I described. Thank you yet again for your input and correction Jason. To the original poster: post a pic and we'll tell you right away. Or Hell, I'll take a picture of all three stock axles this afternoon and we'll consider this resolved.

Yup, that's what I do too. Once you've seen the differences in the shapes, you can tell them apart just by looking at the silhouette of the bottom of the rear axle as a Jeep drives past you or as you follow it on the road (yes, I do this... it's a sickness, haha). Flat bottom = 8.25, round bottom = 35, pointy bottom = 44.
