xj 4x4 lever, stretched linkage maybe?

the 4x4 lever in my xj is kind of out of wack. when its in 2wd, the lever is positioned right above 4hi and when in 4hi its right above 4lo. and i can almost get into 4lo but it pops out as soon as i put it n drive.it seems like the lever needs to be pulled back just a little more for it to stay.( but the plastic of the console is in the way)has anyone had this issue, or any ideas what i could do with it? thanks guys

You need to look under the jeep and see what is wrong with the linkage. My guess is that the bushing that connects the pivot rod to the t-case is bad and the linkage is seperated.

You may just have to adjust the linkage. With the t-case in 2wd loosen the nut on the adjusting rod so you can freely move the shift lever forward to the 2wd mark then tighten up the nut. Then test it to verify you can get to N, 4hi and 4lo.

X2

Place it in 2 wheel drive (actual). Look under the jeep. On the driver side of the transfer case is a series of levers connected to the part time handle. One of those levers has a nut you can loosen, loosen it (should be next to the running board). Push the part time handle forward it should now go all the way to the 2 wheel drive position. Tighten the nut.

You can see the trunnion bolt on the shift rod at the end of my finger, this needs to be loosened to where the shift rod will slide freely though the trunnion. Then you can adjust the shifter to where it needs to be. I usually push the t-case into 4lo manually with the shift tab and then place the shifter into the 4lo position and tighten the trunnion bolt. This is the shift tab back next to the front driveshaft output, it needs to be all the way down and toward the rear to be in 4lo. In the first picture you can see the connecting bracket that goes from the t-case to the body that the linkage rotates on, make sure it is connected securely to both sides.

You may have to hit it with some PB blaster for a few days and then if you have access to a propane torch you can use some heat to loosen the rust free from the trunnion and shift rod. If you do use heat watch out for the fuel lines, they run along the inside of the framerail there.

Grab a hold of the driveshaft and shake it up and down and side to side, ther should be no movement. The driveshaft will turn back and forth a bit due to gear wear, but the u-joints shouldn't move up or down or side to side.
