Writeup: Installing Airflow Snorkel on 97+ XJ

Installed on: 2001 XJ Sport
Approx. Time Installed: 2 hours
Tools Used:
  • 3" Hole Saw
  • Drill
  • 3/8" drill bit or 5/16" bit
  • Angle Grinder (not completely necessary)
  • Flat Head Screwdriver
  • 10mm open end wrench
  • some type of adhesive
  • tin
Here is what the fender looks like normally:

Take the included guide and cut along the dotted line and cut out the small hole. This allows you to tape the guide on to the fender and account for the contour of the a-pillar.

Tape the guide on to the fender making sure it is lined up to the edges of the fender as closely as possible. Use a center punch on all four of the holes to better guide the drill bit and hole saw/

Drill out the 8mm holes (equivalent to about a 5/16th" bit (i used 3/8" cuz i couldnt find a 5/16th in the garage))
The instructions say to remove the guide when drilling but i left it on so i didnt have to retape it all again.

Remove the washer fluid bottle from the fender, otherwise you will drill through it like i did. If you do drill through it just caulk up the hole and call it good.

Then drill out the large hole in the fender. (not as scary as it sounds).
Halfway through the cut you may need to use an angle grinder to cut out a section of the fender to remove a piece of the inner fender that the hole saw cant reach. no big deal takes three seconds.

Remove the inner wire loom from the fender before finishing the cut.

Some grinding on the outer hole may need to be done to ensure a tight fit of the snorkel. DO NOT forget to paint the exposed metal otherwise it may rust.

Remove the air box. Cut two pieces of tin to cover the hole in the front of the air box. Use a strong adhesive to bond these pieces of tin to the airbox.

On the rear of the box, using the 3" hole saw cut a hole to place the adapter into. Also use the adhesive here to attach the adapter firmly into place.

Attach the a-pillar bracket to the snorkel to get a rough estimate on where it needs to be bent.

Do this before bolting the snorkel into place. Once bracket is bent, screw the self tapping screws into a-pillar.

Then screw the threaded rods included into the snorkel and slide the rods through the fender. Add washers and the 10mm nuts to the inner side of the fender well. Fasten securely. The rearmost bolt is a pain to get to but can be done.

You will need to take out the angle grinder again and trim off the excess rod on the bolt closest to the front of the jeep. otherwise washer bottle will not fit

Once securely fastened reinstall the washer bottle and airbox. used the supplied hose clamps to fasten the hose from the snorkel to the airbox. the hose will need to be trimmed so i pulled out the angle grinder again and cut the hose down to size.

Attach the snorkel head using a hose clamp.

Final Product

Thanks for reading, feel free to ask any questions.

Did you prime/paint the edges of your fender cuts to prevent rust?

Seems like a nice kit like that would come with something to cover the front of the airbox... W/e. Looks nice.
So is your washer bottle still in there? I guess this won't work for us ABS guys huh?

Oh, did you fill in the hole in the airbox (the little one in the middle i see in one of the pics)? I have like 20 holes all over my airbox (factory drain holes all over i guess).. and it would be a PITA to caulk them all to install a snorkle, lol.

My washer bottle is still there installed in the same exact location. As for the drain holes, i was reading on go-jeeps writeup that its not a big deal to caulk them all, because if you think about when you dive in the rain the water goes down the snorkel and has to drain out of the air box in some way. Plus he was saying that if your

jeep is sitting in water it will take a while for water to fill the airbox through the drain holes. He floated his box in a bucket of water and it didnt fill up even with the drain holes in place

Yeah.. Its so odd to have so many holes in it though.. I mean I easily have 20, lol. While it may not really fill just sitting in there, with the engine on i would think the negative pressure would draw more water through it. Glad to know the washer bottle can stay, I had the impression that it needed to be reloacted, but maybe that is with a different snorkel.. How much did this one run you?

Oh, what is the frontmost 8mm hole for, if the snorkle feeds through the fender farther back? does the outer cover just go that far forward?

I ask so many questions because I like it, and have always been considering one... Weighing pros/cons with the cowl snorkels..

This snorkel ran me about 370, but the way i see it i just bought a new stroker, and every time i go wheeling i find a way to swamp the jeep so this is pretty good insurance lol.

As for the frontmost hole, its just a mounting hole, im not sure if there is any particular reason for it to go that far forward other then the fact that it looks better then if it just stopped where it entered the fender.

The ARB snorkel requires the washer bottle to be removed.

Haha nice try....

its definitely legit although I don't think it matches the body lines as well as the Safari Snorkel...whatever's cheaper is what I would go with.

I have also abused mine since that pic was taken...(2 years ago) and can tell you that the ARB is definitely durable as crap. I've hit a few trees and it is fine
