Looks really nice. I was thinking about the same thing. I thought it looked like the best place to put it, but I did not know what was behind it for bracing of whatever (Now I know). How much depth did you have to mount the Sub? You used a 10"....How deep is the speaker? I have to pick up a new Sub.

Again it looks great!!

My Punch P2 is 5.5" from the mounting flange to the back of the magnet. The enclosure is 6" from the face of the enclosure to the outer fender, which gives me about .5" for the voice coil vent to breath and keep it from cooking.

Has anyone calculated what the volume of air inside the box comes out to? I would like to do this mod down the road in order to save some cargo space. (have a alrge box built for my 10" sub) However, I don't see there being more than 0.8 cu.ft. in there. I think my sub says 1.1 cu.ft. in the specs...

I would say that it's about .8 for how I have mine built, the seat belt assembly made my enclosure smaller. Since you have an 89 (by your sig) which doesn't have rear shoulder belts, you can extend the enclosure all the way up to the back door and should easily get up to the 1.1 cubic feet needed for your driver.

Mine sounds fantastic with the enclosure that I built.

I thought I would throw my two cents in. I did the same thing in mine, only I used two eights. One on each side. If you take the drivers side panel off, and remove the mounting bracket for the spare tire, you can just fight a eight inch sub in there.

Copbait...If it has a hole in the magnet on the back, and you plan on powering it with proper power, you will probably need more space behind the magnet. The voice coil will need about 1-2" IIRC to keep cool. If you dont push it, it may work, but you may fry the VC in 8 months. If you havent bought the sub yet, I would look into a shallower sub, or one that doesnt have a VC vent in the magnet.

Cruzmyxj, Got pics?

Well, I'm in the process of doing this right now. So far I have foamed the cavity (still drying) and have the sub mounted onto my 3/4" particle board cover which fits perfectly into that space, thanks to a cardboard mockup.

Although the 10w3 is a fairly deep sub, it fits just fine with plenty of space left behind it as I have it mounted in front of the panel, so I am not too concerned about cooling. I very much doubt I could have gone with a 12w3 but probably a 12w0 or another shallow 12 would fit just barely. I think a single 10 will be just fine for my needs though, I only want some additional SQ not earth shattering bass.

I ended up removing my shoulder belts all together and sealed up the holes in the panels, re-routed all the wiring, and extended and re-routed the rear wiper fluid hose so I could create a good seal in that cavity. I'll be taking some pics of everything so you can see what I am talking about here. So far I'm happy with how it's coming along, and it's a fairly fun project so I'm taking my time making sure the end result will not only sound good but be as stock looking as possible

Was able to finish up most of the install today. Here is a link to several pics of the install:

Well since I finished the enclosure, I was finally able to upgrade my charging system with the Big 3 and Optima redtop (both highly recommended) and then get my amp installed.

I have to say that I was less than pleased with the results. I made several poor choices which resulted in lots of vibrations and just a crappy sounding sub in general. It was pretty bad.

So I tried again:

-used MDF instead of crappy particle board. MDF is WAY better, it cuts and drills without chipping, and is just a better material to work with.

-used the right kind of foam, Great Stuff is the best and I would highly recommend it.

-thick layer of dynomat inside the entire enclosure.

-double layer of weather stripping around the edges of the paneling.

-used flat head screws with washers instead of tapered head to prevent cracking around the holes of the MDF

After these changes I have to say that it sound AWESOME! It's exactly what I hoped for when doing this mod, sound about as good as most any single sub enclosure I've heard. I did have to stuff some padding into the hatch cover to eliminate one source of vibrations, so now it's virtually vibration free and I couldn't be happier.

I just need to figure out all these damn tuning options on my Alpine amp

ok so it sounds good inside, right? How does the body sound on the outside when the volume is turned up? Do you get a loud BOING! when it hits hard?

I started doing this yesterday and I noticed that there's a little lip on the bottom right corner that sticks out a bit. Do I need to bend that or shave it off or anything? Here's a pic with the part circled that I stole from a previous post.

Also I now hate that foam stuff. My smart self ended up getting a bunch of it in my hair. So now I think it's either a nice shave job or maybe just pull some hair out.
