wobbling idler pulley?

Hey all, I'm new here, but I've been reading threads for a while, now I need some help.

Just got a 99 XJ sport 4x4 2 weeks ago, no problems aside from the standard-fare driver door speaker issue (I already fixed it!), but today I noticed a rattle from under the hood.

I opened it and saw that the main center pulley coming from the engine (idler? not sure on that) is wobbling around. I'm assuming it's not something I can tighten up as if its come loose. (?) Can anyone give me more info about what kind of repair this will require? I would love to do it myself if possible, also how long can I drive on this thing without expecting to be stranded somewhere? I'm trying to keep this car in good shape, but I do have to go to work in the morning... Pep boys is open till 9!

Easy fix, the pulley is just held on by a single bolt through the center. Remove the belt and replace.

After snooping around, I'm wondering if the pulley I'm talking about is the water pump pulley. It has 4 bolts on the front and it is smooth around the edge. What do you think?

I took the belt off to get a better look at it.

I'm guessing I could be looking at more than just a pulley replacement?

That would be your water pump and yes, you're looking at water pump replacement if the pulley mounting bolts to the water pump are tight. Are you leaking any coolant? In most cases if the water pump is so bad it makes the pulley to wobble, you'd be loosing coolant through the bearing of the water pump.

Thanks for the reply. Just had to replace the whole water pump. Couldn't do it myself, not quite there yet. At least I was able to tell them what the problem was! Thanks again.

Your water pump was just replaced? I'd double check the four bolts holding the pulley to the water pump that they are tight, and that the pulley is seated correctly on the pump.

When you rotate the pulley (with the serp belt removed), does it feel like the water pump is turning fairly freely? If you try to rock the pulley, does it have play in any direction?
