Windshield Replacement!

Hey guys, i posted a few weeks ago about replacing my windshield. After strong opposition to the home job, and refferal to the professional, i am still going to do it myself. I already have a window, but im just confused about one part. When i cut the window out at the U-pull-it, i only saw the Ribbon Sealer, like this one http://www.levineautoparts.com/3mwirorise14.html. I have a box of that and i also picked up some fast setting urethane like this one. http://www.levineautoparts.com/3mwinsupfasu.html. I have heard several differnt things from several different people, all at different levels of knowledge on the subject. Starting with me only seeing the ribbon sealer when cutting it off, i assumed that was all i needed. A friend that worked in a body shop said i should use both. And another guy told me i only need the urethane, in a nice thick bead. My first steps are going to be to fully remove all left over ribbon sealer on both the window and body, clean everything, make sure its all level as can be, and lay down a lair of primer/bonding agent on the surface of the window frame (if needed, not sure on which method i need yet). Mainly i need to know, do i use just the ribbon sealer, just the urethane, or both?

I know this isn't for a Cherokee, but when my daughter's window was done (last night) the guy left a thin layer of the old urathane on the frame and said that actually doesn't hurt anything. He then put a form of primer on the window frame to prevent rust and promote adhesion. Next he cleaned the windshield on the inside and scuffed the edge where the urathane will touch (about 1" in) with what looked like 200 grit sand paper. Then he applied a primer to the windshield where he sanded. After that he applied the urathane to the windshield frame on the car. It was a bead about a 1/2" wide by 1/2" tall in a triangle shape. He then set the windshield and replaced the trim. I was told not to let the daughter drive the car for 1 hour or pressure wash it for at least 24 hours. Hope this helps.

I've never seen that Ribbon stuff???

I've always seen the nasty black stuff....

Here's what I did.

After I pulled my windshield and did all the "work" I wanted to do......I called a mobile company and had them come out and install it with a 98+ rubber seal, eliminating the Hoopty steel trim around the windshield.

They came out and did it for $40.00

Sooooooo worth it.

i must look into the newer rubber seal. the previous owner of my jeep thought it was a great idea to hold down those hoopty steel trim pieces with wood screws.

ahahahahahahaaaa, that's Hoopty X2

It's a good cheap fix that improves the look X100

Du-Eeet.

Oh, and the guy that came out to do the windshield didn't think it would work....so just tell him to DO IT. The windshields are different but the frame in which they mount are identical.

Thats the same stuff i believe. Right now in the box it looks like a giant tootsie roll.
All of the places i called wont do it with my window, due to liability i guess. Cheapest i could find for window and install is 270$. I already have the window, and all the tools, so this really only costed me 30$. I guess ill just try it with the urethane and not the ribbon sealer

Had one replaced last year..the outside rubber seal that you can see from the factory doesnt really seal anything its more for looks and spacing the glass....the only place you should need to put adhesive for it is in the corners or anywhere it sticks up...just make sure to goop it up with that black stuff on the rest of the glass all the way around then use some masking tape to let it set up overnight

Just look around and find someone to do it for you that has experience. I had to replace the windshield in my camaro and I just went to autoparts stores and asked the people working if they knew anybody that could do it for me. I paid the guy 30 bucks and he used all of his own supplies, I just had to give him the windshield.

Reviving a moldy oldy, that's the first I've heard of upgrading to the rubber gasket design.....that'd be the poo for the DIY folks. That tip is sticky worthy!
