Windshield Replacement

Hey guys. I have decided to replace my windshield myself. I went to the junkyard and grabbed a windshield for 30$. When cutting it out with the wire i only really saw what i would describe as a ribbon sealer, similar to this product http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ribbon-Sealer-Auto-Glass-Replacement-Kit_W0QQitemZ330083636794QQcmdZViewItem. Anyone here know what else is involved with replacing the windshield? As i said i only really saw the ribbon sealer (it was hard which im assuming was just because it was old). Is urethane used? Any tips apprectiated. For those who are going to reccomend me to the professional glass installer...im going to do it myself

actually....there's a lot of work involved...especially if you're running into the 'tar' strip. it's a pain in royal rear...

firstly, you have to remove almost all of the original tar strip. i found that a knife and wd-40 works wonders if you have enough lube. second...you have to make sure that when you do get all the tar off, that the frame is straight enough to support the new windshield...that meand hammer and wood time. making the metal flat, and checking for cuts in the paint. you'll want to spray something on it..doesnt matter since it's under the shield. should at least be primer'd. clean the windshield exceptionally well, using the most powerfull cleaners you can buy over the shelf. also to the frame. lay down the new tar strip and cut to fit (unless you want to 'upgrade' to the new polyurithane stuff, it's much better and much easier to use if you have to do this again...ever) if you want to use the poly stuff, you'll need to remove ALL the tar stuff from the frame and shield...then lay down a thick bead of poly or tar and lay the shield flat onto the surface, quickly inserting the support plastic pieces and the trim. then, put in the sun for about 4 hours or run the defroster on high heat for an hour or so if you're in a cooler climate.

wow that's a lot of stuff. or, since you already have glass, pay someone the 40 or 50 bucks and have them do it in an hour.

So that ribbon sealer will harden up and seal/keep everything tied in correct? No need for another adhesive? I have some Fast Set Urethane Adhesive if needed.
