Winch selonid placement

I just bought a rugged ridge 8500 lb winch. For now I dont plan on using it much or at all till this summer so I was wondering if there was some way to wire it so I could mount it in the engine compartment or somewhere else. Or I was thinking about putting quick connect connections or a military grade amphenol on the wires so I could connect it only when I need it.

Any pros or cons would help. I have never had a winch before so I am a newbie.

-the solenoid is commonly relocated to the engine compartment - water and weather failure is more likely than failure due to elevated temperatures in the engine bay

-HD connectors are commonly used to isolate the winch when not expected to be used - this will ensure not drain from a leaking solenoid, but would be inconvenient if you had to pop the hood to connect while mired in the mud etc.

I built my own bumper and mounted it beside the winch itself covered from rain and snow, but close enough to use the existing wiring on it. I'm wired direct to the battery, but test it occasionally for amperage draw.

I placed mine under the front passenger fender, just behind the bumper:

I had mine on my 96 under the hood. I had to put an intake tube and cone filter to make room where the stock air box was and extend the cables from the solenoid to the winch. It worked great for many years. Here's the best pictures I could find:
