Why does my liftgate rattle

this is a new occurrence. Seems like it is not latching all the way. I took apart the latch and oiled it but dont see any adjustments on it. What am i missing?

the latch clicks twice on 97+ if its only clicking once, its broke and will rattle. can allways get some rubber bump stops and mount those, so when the hatch closes, the bump stops push on it

On my '98 there were already bump stops on the body that the liftgate came in contact with when it closed. They're just rubber and mine were really cracked and my gate was rattling, i replaced them and all is well now. They're also adjustable, if you pull off the rubber part there is a torx screw and you can turn that to adjust how tightly it fits against the door. Hope this helps.

Did you search?

The loop part of the latch on the bottom of the hatch opening can be adjusted. It looks like there are studs that can't be adjusted. The nuts to adjust it are on the bottom. Look down between the metal bumper and the hatch weather seal and you'll see them. You can reach them with a deep socket and a 10" extension. If your hatch is rattling, the loop needs to be moved just a tad toward the front of the Jeep. Loosen both nuts just a bit and tap the loop to move it slightly. Tighten them up and close the hatch to see if it helped. If you move the loop too far forward, the hatch won't latch shut.

The bumpstops push the hatch in the open direction. That counters gravity which is pushing it closed. Takes all of the wiggle room away. Wiggle = rattle.

My tailgate rattles like heck too. Makes me insane. Did a search and found these bumpers, they're located on the body side of hatch and mine were shot to hell so I ordered a set.
Found them here: Jeep XJ, Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Comanche and Jeep Wagoneer Parts: Tailgate and Related Parts

Scroll down, they're third from the bottom.

This sounds like the problem. I will look into it.
