Post whining

ok, ive had this whining for a few months now (dont worry, the jeep is only driven to keep the battery charged, etc.) and i cant figure out what it is! it started after i replaced the 3rd member, and i also put new wheel brarings in it a few days ago, so i know its not them. what could be wrong? ive pretty much mastered disassembling the rear end in the past month, so i know whats in there. i was thinking...would it be worth getting a junk yard rear end, rather then spending all this time?

any suggestions would be appreciated.

Did it start right after replacing the third member??

It could be the ring-pinion gears werent installed correctly. If they arent matched up they will whine, kinda lick a medium pitched hum.

Also, what gear ration is in the third member?

yes, it started right after replacing the third member

also, i had it on jack stands and ran it with only one axle installed (i did this with both axles) and it made the noise. i then ran it with no axles, and it sounded fine as i said, the bearings are new so...

the gear ratio is 3.73:1

thanx for the input, stvdman

Yes, I believe this is correct stvdman it can whine because thier isn't enough spacing, it can also whine if thier is to much but you will notice a blacklash as it slows down thru the gears. Hope this helps, but i think its the spacing put a micrometer on the gears and check the tolerance.

backlash? ok, now im really confused. would it be better to just get the rear end rebuilt? we've been thinking about this, but dont know how much it can cost. ill make some phone calls on this, and post.
