Where is my temperature guage sending unit? ('98 XJ)

Is it on the thermostat housing?

Either my Jeep is running REEEEEEAAALLLY cold or the sending unit failed.
It's a '98, 4.0. I'm seeing random plugs everywhere...which one is the right one, or are there multiples?

It's the censor on the thermostat housing.

Make sure the sender wire connection is clean and the wire is not damaged.

I just bought it and I think the PO had the engine compartment steam-cleaned... it's super clean, but I'm wondering if this could have messed with a close-to-messed up wiring situation. I have a spare Jeep out back, I'll swap out the plug and see

incorrect to all the previous posts. The sensor Tim indicated is indeed the CTS, but it only is a switch that tells the thermostat when to open. The Coolant Temperature Sending Unit for the gauges is at the rear of the head on the drivers side of the valve cover on a late model XJ.

OBD-II, 1997-2001 only have 1 sensor.

Ooh this is getting good. Is the rear one a guage feed and the front one a thermostat switch, or what? Is the rear one just for pre-97's? The Jeep isn't here so I can't look for the rear one.

Edit, posting at the same time as Tim. I've heard of having to plug that rear hole when doing a head swap on a newer one...

hmmm...i found two separate part numbers and descriptions in the parts guide, and thought that it was the same for all late model XJs with the temp gauge. Disregard my post i suppose. Learn something new every day.
