when did they start putting fuel injection on the xj?

in my search for a used xj, i want to be sure none of the ones i look for aren't fuel injected, so what year did they start equipping them with it?

also is there any place i can go for in depth year-to-year technical specs?

I think, and don't hold me to it, they started using fuel injection in 88. I'm sure some one will chime in with a more definitive answer.

if you look at the top of the Cherokee forum here there is a sticky with a pretty decent year by year break down of what they had.

The first Fuel Injected XJ's had the 2.5L I-4 in 1986. The first genereation 4.0L followed in 1987. The 2.5 prior to that was a carbed motor (and the only motor offered, besides the overseas diesel).

Carbueretion means less (or no) electronics. That translates to easier tweaking and swapping of different parts.

That being said though, the 4.0L is a powerhouse and will last forever. Plus, I don't know if you were thinking about an engine swap, but those older XJ's had a significantly smaller engine bay until the 4.0L were made.

Now, don't any of you flame me for this, but the early XJ's were also prone to many problems, particularly with the wiring. So, if you're planning to build up a trail rig, that's fine. But, if you're looking for a DD, then I would suggest looking a bit newer.

Good Luck,

Peter

I suppose it's true about the electronics, but aren't there other advantages to fuel injection for a trail rig? Like not starving for fuel on steep or off camber obstacles?

I think he had a double negative in there, he does want a fuel injected rig.

Well, in that case, just look '86 and up ('87 if you want the 4.0) and all models will be fuel injected. The stock specs sticky also has a lot of info on what came equipped on what years.

Good Luck,

Peter

Yes... The 2.8's were carbed, and very powerless But they were decent little engines, had an 86 MJ and an 85 XJ both with the 2.8 and never really experienced any real problems. But the 4.0 is WAY better, injection is the only way to go.
