A dab taste test is not likely to result in poisoning with ANY fluid found in an automobile. The concentrations are WAY too low. It's not like you are taste-testing VX nerve gas....

I don't own an XJ any longer, but I still think they are the best of all the Jeep products ever made. My XJ was my favorite vehicle in my 50+ years of driving.
So...I stick around and give advice.

I agree. I've been using taste to verify fluid leaks on $200 vehicles I've owned for 25 years now.

Hell, I ended up swallowing/inhaling around a cup or two of gasoline when I went to go change the gas tank on a 77 Olds Cutlass. Had to siphon it out and was too cheap to get a pump. Tried starting the siphon by mouth...

yeah. i agree this is supposedly a bad idea. but i've never suffered any ill effects. yes i suppose mucous membranes could pick up some of the fluids but that's why you spit it out and swish/spit with beer. the ethanol helps to dissolve anything on the tongue for a fresh clean feeling.

i suppose vodka would be an even better choice but i'd wake up next to the jeep with the leafsprings on upside down if i did that.

Yes there are few posions out there that can kill without ingesting them.

You would need to drink a few cups of Ethel Glycol before you felt any adverse effects.

i'd taste test something i suspected was coolant or even oil, but i don't think i'd go so far as p/s fluid or brake fluid. Not for toxic reasons, but just they don't look very tasty. and yes, we're talking a drop, not slurping up as much as you can and licking your engine bay clean to gather what your missing fluid might be.
