what would cause my exhaust manifold to glow red?

After about 5 mins of running the exhaust manifold glows red. I know this not normal. The Jeep runs pretty good with the exceptions of an intermittent high idle. Clogged Cat? Running rich/lean? Although if it ran rich/lean wouldn't that through a code?

My bet is a vacuum leak causing a lean mixture.

Wouldn't a Lean Mixture cause a CEL?

Not if a bad oxygen sensor fails to recognize the lean mixture. In fact, the oxygen sensor could well be the root cause of the problem.

Cat is not glowing red only manifold up to the section where it turns into one pipe. It's also intermittent. I started her up last night and she idled and ran fine. Im stumped and don't want to throw money at guesses. It feels like I have good pressure at the tail pipe when I start her.

If the o2 sensor were bad and not picking up the lean mixture, wouldn't I get a code for the o2 sensor?

when you first turn the key on does the CEL come on then go off?

I do have a CEL, It's for EVAP Leak Large detection. It also through a TPS code ( But I think thats from unplugging it to see if it had changed the idle quality.) No code for the O2 sensor or rich/lean air/fuel mixture. I drove her today and she's running fine. (Manifold looks to be normal temp, not glowing). You think the intermittent high idle has something to do with the manifold getting red hot?

THe high idle is due to your tps so change or try and adjust it, and it could fix your exhaust problem too.

When I unplug the TPS with the car running the idle bumps up and down then steady's itself. Does this mean the TPS is bad? When I unplug the IAC nothing happens.

i would clean your iac mine got suck open and it turned really red and i was freaking out cuz i was running about 45 and the jeep just kept going like the cruise was on wehn i finally pulled over i was sittin at abou 1750 rpms and i got some carb cleaner and havent had a problem since. just clean it out really good

I cleaned it very well, it wasn't in that bad of shape. I want to check the tps, can I use a digital fluke meter? If so how do I Go about testing it?

When I messed up my timing, my pipes were glowing red all the way through to the muffler lol.

Pull and read your plugs.
