What to Pay for U-Joint Replacment.

Hey guys. i need a front axle u-joint replaced on my 93 xj.
Its a bit over my head so i want to bring it in. so far i only called one place, and they want about $230 (assuming everything goes smoothly).
this seems kinda high.

so my question is, what should i pay for a front axle U-joint to be replaced?

thanks
Anthony

pizza and a 12pk of beer if I do the work.

If you had to buy new tools specifically for the job, and a new u-joint, it would cost you about $80 and take about 1-1.5 hours. Really, it is simple to do and there are numerous write-ups with pictures about the process.

I think the last one I had replaced was about $60...part included. It's about 45 minutes labor.

Whatever you do-don't get this or anything else done at that shop. That seems very VERY expensive.

I really think that you can do this if you have the tools.

If you don't or are worried...contact some local 4x4 clubs or shops because I'm sure there's someone who'll do it cheaper

There's a machine shop here that charges $13 if I just bring them the half-shaft and the new U-Joint. $13 is so little money it's not even worth the effort of me beating/pressing the thing out of there.

If you decide to do the work yourself, purchase the Harbor Freight Ball Joint Press mention in the linked pages or rent one from your local parts store. The press make the job much easier and causes much less cussing than using some old sockets and a hammer.
