The lowest grade the engine will run on without pinging because using anyhigher is a waste of money. You get no more power or mileage from using a higher grade than necessary.

Its a fairly low compression engine, theres no reason to run any higher.

It *should* burn cleaner and it's only 20 cents more per gallon than 87 - making a typically full tank refill three dollars more expensive. And at $45 per tank, that's only 7%.

45$ per tank full ??? at 3.50$ where are you getting your math from if you fill 20 Gallons at 3.50$ it is 70$ even

Oh yeah if it is 0.20$ more it is 4$ more per fill up

Actually you are incorrect. The octane rating has nothing to do with cleanliness. It has to do with how much the gas can be compressed without detonating. Unless you are running a high compression stroker or something along those lines, there is no reason to run 93 in an XJ. You are wasting your money, and putting more pollutants into the environment.

I use 90 octane here on the west coast of Canada. It runs better in my XJ than 87. It is a 10% ethonol blend which reduces emissions somewhat. I notice that I will get very light pinging under some conditions when I use brand-x 87-octane. Oh and most importantly, the price of 90-octane is offerend by one company at the same price of 87, so there is really no financial pain by running 90! If there was, I admit, i'd be running 87 like I always used to!
