Verify it's the correct engine.

XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

XJ/ZJ blocks and 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications. (1991 to 1995 YJ and 1997-1999 4.0L TJ Wrangler blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ and visa-versa).

TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.

XJ: "Regular" (not Grand) Cherokees 84-01
ZJ: Grand Cherokee 93-98 (Gen1)
WJ: Grand Cherokee 99-04 (Gen2)
YJ: Wrangler 87-95 (Gen1)
TJ: Wrangler 97-06 (Gen2)

Thanks Brother for this info. You saved me a big headache and a lot of work. I have seen this warning a number of times but the importance wasn't apparent to me. I went out to the garage this morning and braced the motor with a jack and board under my 96. I first checked the passenger side. The bolts could not have been any tighter. I scooted over to the driver's side and the bolts were finger loose. I am very fortunate to not have experienced any damage yet. Again, thank you so very much.

had the 95 XJ in the shop not once but twice for the same thing, first time the bolt broke off i didn't realize it till the engine cut off on me, was able to push it in an empty parking lot (luckily) found out why my engine cut off and wouldn't start back up the distributor snapped in half. so word of advice. if the bolts snap on you for whatever reason especially the ones on passenger side right next to the distributor to save you a lot of money and time in to it by drilling out and putting new bolts into it and a new distributor make sure when the snap fix it ASAP not wait a few weeks/month or two after it happens to fix it. it'll cost you a lot more headaches trying to put a distributor in it.

Since I haven't been able to find this info, here is the bolt size, straight from the parts fiche:

.375-16x1.125

--OR--

3/8-16x1-1/8

I attached the image from the fiche for reference.

(admittedly I stopped reading the thread and just went to find this, so maybe someone already posted)

I had to change mine after the fact, I was not prepared and in a hurry. I went back with Homedepot bolts.
Later I bought much better quality, grade 9 IIRC, never had the chance to go back and replace them again.
I would look for the best quality I can find instead of going back with the original.

Put a set of Brown Dog rubber mounts on my '94 XJ and they are awesome! Took two hours and put my driveline back inline and lessened some vibes I was getting.

I would. Believe me, it's no fun after the fact.
