You should do what I have. Use square tubing that inserts into the frame rails. Inside the square tubing you weld some nuts on to make removal and install a breeze. You have to cut a little square out of the rear, but it works very well. I'm no fabricator though, so I don't know what is the strongest, but its the same way a hitch mounts, so its gotta be strong.

that is how my aftermarket one came so I had angle iron added to the bumper that connects to the frames.

NO!!! The stock bumper mounts are definitely NOT strong enough for pulling your XJ out of a stuck situation!

If you want to pull on the bumper then, in addition to mounts at the stock location, you need to get a set of the nutcerts that go into the frame rails and attach the bumper along those.

I tried running my 75 pound custom steel bumper with the stock mounts and when I got stuck it ripped the stock mounts right off. I would recamend running angle iron back about 12 inches on the frame rails( or unibody rails, whatever they are) and bolt it through a couple of times.

Here is a link to my jeep thread. You can see how I mounted the bumper. The bumper just bolts off and it is strong enought to be tugged on. I found this out friday night when I rolled my jeep into a hole. Two full sized trucks put chains on my bumper and pulled the jeep out and it didnt even budge.

They dealer ship sells them, but if your able to build your own bumper, you can make your own nut strip.

All you need are nuts and bolts and a little metal strip. Slide it into the frame rail and mark where then holes are. Drill them out and make sure they are still in the right posistion. Then tack the nuts to the metal peice and see if it fits.

Or like he said, you can get then at a yard, but it can be a pain in the butt, cause you have to remove the rear bumper, which can be a nightmare on a junkyard vehicle. Also, most XJs on have them on the passenger side, I thknk only the ones with tow packages had them on the driver side too.
