upgraded headlight loom relay problem
hey guys,
so yesterday i decided to upgrade my headlight wiring harness in order to run some new autopal lights that i picked up, but now i have run into a small problem. I did a lot of searching on the forum and could not find anyone who had the same problem, therefore i am posting this. I used a number of different write-ups to build my harness but it most closely resembles this one: http://fitchva.com/jeep/gallery1/albums/album76/diagram_complete.jpg the problem i am having is that the driver side headlight (which is powered by pin 87a on both relays i.e. high and low) is always on. even when the headlight switch is in the off position both the high and low beam filaments are illuminated. the passenger side light works perfectly. worst case scenario i will just power both sides off of pin 87 by splicing the wires, but i would really like to have this work correctly. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks a lot Chris

Swap the relays and see if the problem stays with the same lamp or if it follows the misbehaving relay to the other side. I would guess you have a little mistake in the wiring or possibly a bad relay.

i read that sometimes removing the stock headlight fuses fixes problems people have with these upgraded headlight harnesses so i tried it. i removed both the fuse under the hood (the big 40amp one) and the one on the driver side under the dash (the regular 25amp one) and still no luck. my meter still reads 12volts on both the high and low pin of the female H4 connector on the driver side, and the passenger side still works perfectly fine. so i am guessing that it has to do with the relay and the 87a pin. according to this diagram:
http://i13.ebayimg.com/02/i/001/02/63/38cc_1.JPG it would appear that on a 5pin relay, pin 87a is always powered by pin 30 which is in my case the 12volts in. so am i missing something? **EDIT: due to me being hasty with my relay buying decision i just realized that the relays i bought are not the correct ones. instead of 87a and 87 being open when the relay is not powered 87a is always closed. the relays that i need to get are these: http://fitchva.com/jeep/gallery1/albums/album05/relaybasics_SPST_dualoutputs.jpg i hope that through my confusion it may help someone in the future lol. I am going to buy the correct relays now and will let you know if they work.

from the diagram it looks as if 87a is normally closed switch the connector to 87 and see if the problem goes away
