My only concern is if the housing's thick enough to accept a fitting safely and that the seals are strong enough to prevent them from blowing out when grease is applied....I'd appreciate input if anyone has any.

I'm also not entirely sure how well made the factory seals are, but if the seal works, you shouldn't have to keep adding grease. If you use a quality wheel bearing grease, and pack it deep into the bearing (hand press technique) you should be able to get at least 200,000 worry free miles out of the bearing. More than likely, forcing more grease into the bearing will damage the seal. You also might risk getting grease onto the brake rotor.

I would just pack them well and call it good. Merry Christmas!

I stumbled across these the other day and called the store to get more info. It's the front wheel bearing hub for 84-89 XJs and carries a lifetime warranty for $49.99, replacement for Timken P/N 513107...downside is it's made in China. My concern would be that they may use poor grade steel and/or weak seals...what are your opinions on it? I know for that price, if it's a quality part, I sure as hell wouldn't waste a couple hours cleaning and pressing new bearings in/out of the old hub!

Is it the entire hub, or just the bearing? But without being able to compare the two bearings its kinda hard to say. Simply because its made in china doesn't neccesarily mean its crap.

It's the whole enchilada...both halves of the hub, five studs, two races, two cone bearings and three seals. I realize not everything made in China is junk and that they can make things far cheaper than we can but seeing as it's 1/2-1/3 of the going US price I question if it will even survive being unpacked. lol I say that in jest, I'm actually considering getting one for my XJ to see how it looks, feels and what type of bearings and seals are in it prior to disclosing the source...I'd feel like crap if someone heard about it through me then it wound up being garbage.

From what I have seen, the odds are stacked pretty heavily against parts that had to cross the Pacific to get here. The old "You get what you pay for" rule isn't absolute, either. But every time I bet against it, I seem to lose.
I would buy Timkens and be happy. In fact, that's what I did about 80k miles ago; I'm still happy.

Definetly. I've always lived by that principle as well. But for most things...you won't know its crap until you use it. Harbor freight is a great example

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I'd add...
I grenaded 5 d30 unit bearings of various makes and types in 2 years

before I built my 44

unit bearings don't like the sideloading that turning in the rocks gives them
http://www.utah4x4club.com/index.php?showtopic=3870&hl=unit+bearing

see the metal shavings... now count the ball bearings... see a problem???

If your having to replace them that often, your more than likely not torquing the hub nut to spec.

Why do you guy's keep replacing your blown hubs with the same POS ball bearing hub? It should be a clue to do the roller bearing swap

HERE HERE! Torque your sh!t and make sure you're bolting something on that's worth the effort in the first place. The rollerbearing design can withstand three times the amount of lateral pressure that the ballbearings can. The proof's in the pudding.....factory hubs for the Renix models typically last 15-20yrs.

OK guys bear with me I have been out of the loop for awhile. If I'm reading this right I can upgrade to the previous design roller bearing hub as long as I use the early brake disc. Are there any differences in the older brake disc other than what they did to match it to the hub? Have any of you actually done this?

If this is the case I'm grateful that this tread came back to life. If this is not the case I'm still thankful as it is something that needed to resurface as a lesson so that others might not be hurt or killed because they assume that the stub axle is only there to drive the wheel.

I hate having to upgrade to a previous anything. My lap top has vista and I'm going to end up having to upgrade to a previous OS just to make it reliable.
