Unitbearing slaughter

Proof that dana 30 unitbearings are not a fan of 35s on low backspacing

i just put this hub assembly this past February, wheeled it this year, and its already far and beyond shot (hint, these should not be 2 seperate pieces)

maybe i just bought a cheapo replacement, either way, my stock ones lasted over 110k...these not so much

I bought a set from NAPA with a lifetime warranty for this reason. I'm hoping that I won't have a need to change them but closer to every 2 years. But if I need to sooner it won't hit the wallet any more. Of course I am using 32/33's so hopefully mine will last longer if for no other reason.

Stop using those spacers. That is the cause of all that is wrong with the world.

D30 unit bearings just suck.

I managed to carnage a D44 wheel bearing on my last trip. It cost me $15...

Sounds like a good deal... just make sure you blow them up one more time before the warranty is up and get the new set.

oh and what happens when you did that?

where you wheelin or just driving around town?

Then you got lucky?

has anyone had the unitbearing break on the trail/where ever and what happens?

Is it possible? (stupid ? Im sure, anything is...)

Im thinking that if it breaks the axle shaft would just slide out and it would be the same situation you would be in if you blew a C-clip on a turdy-5

Why I carry my old hubs for spares

I just replaced mine. My passenger side came off in 6 pieces. When I took it off, I thought to myself, "Damn dude, that could have been bad." After tearing mine down, I came to the conclusion that the retention setup is a fail safe design. It will hold together even without bearings in the races.

I got some Timken replacements from Rockauto for not much more than I would have paid locally for store brand crap.

when I had my 30, I was goin through a set of cheapo's a year, timken lasted longer but not too much, the BS and large tires kill those things. When I blew up my 30 at big dogs, I ran the units home 200mi with just the stubs in 'em, so just keep some extra stubs too

If I recall correctly a well known club member of Terra Jeep died not too long ago because he tried to limp home his rig. He left the outer shaft out of the bearing; it failed came off then rolled his jeep. I think he was coming home from the baldands.
