Two problems

My tail gate mechanism is not working, will not unlatch. Is there a way to remove the inner gate panel to access the mech with the gate closed? Or other suggestions?

My heater A/C fan only operates on high speed "4" on the switch, can this be fixed without replacing the whole $300 unit the dealer is telling me?

Thanks for your input

My tailgate does that sometimes. I've always been able to open it by prying on the latch fingers with a screwdriver while pulling on the latch. Once it's open, take the latch apart and lube it up.

I think if your fan only works on high, it means you need to replace a resister. I think if you ask at the auto parts store they'll know what you need.

Not sure on the door, you will have to fiddle with it. As for the blower. It's called a blower motor resistor. It's like 7 bucks for a new one and takes no time to install. I might have a picture on my phone here... It's just above the vent on the passenger side.

Sent from my iPhone, probably because I am bored at work.

Since we have determined it is a Cherokee the fan speed is the resistor.

The rear latch mechanism I believe has a cover that can be removed. Has to be a way to get it open.

might have better luck with responses on the XJ forum, this is the YJ forum... (XJ=Cherokee, YJ=87-95 Wranglers)

that said, I did have an XJ once - it was an 87 so yours may be different, but on mine, there was NO way to access the mechanism with the gate closed.

Good luck

You need to ask yourself why the resistor went bad first tho. It would be a good idea to read the current draw of the blower motor and compare it to specifications. If it is way over spec. The blower motor is drawing too much current and taking out your blower motor resistor. I usually end up replacing both when I run into this problem.

Thanks folks, replaced the resistor ($54) and fan works well, all 4 speeds. Old resistor was rusted and covered in trash. Now all I need to do is solve the tail gate situation. I'm thinking I have to cut a hole in the interior panel

Got to be a better way. Know anyone who steals cars??? Just a thought but with a picture if how the mechanism works you may get it open.

You should be able to climb in the back cargo area and undo the screws and just pull off the panel giving you access to the inside latch mechanism with out destroying the panel, then jut the rod up a bit plenty of write up here if ya search a bit.

ah,beer the cause of and cure to all of lifes problems ...Homer J Simpson... I am the guy in the red jeep!

Pull up on the handle....HARD, and hit the gate above the handle with the palm of your hand. After you get it open pull the interior panel and readjust the linkage
