My understanding is that 2003 and newer are TUPY. I've heard that the stamping is somewhere around cylinders 3 and 4 but that is not confirmed. Maybe somebody with actual knowledge of TUPY will chime in.

Also, I would like to know where Jeep sourced the TUPY head from??

hey I just got done replacing my head yesterday. i didnt eve look for a junkyard head just bought it from here:

NEW JEEP/CHEROKEE/LAREDO 4.0/0331 CYLINDER HEAD : eBay Motors (item 160359021523 end time Mar-27-10 08:49:00 PDT)

has a 2 year unlimited mile warranty, is BRAND new, and they got it to me in 3 days.....free shipping too. i looked everywhere and called all around the US.

the job was not bad at all, hardest part were the underside exhaust/intake manifold bolts.

if you do get that head there is a hole that needs to be plugged, pm me if you want more details!

Just saw a pic on another sight of a "Tupy" head. Could not capture the image for this sight (smartphone's are very limited.)
But it can be seen once the oil fill cap is removed. It is directly below the oil fill cap on the cylinder head.
I hope this help's some people,I too am facing the very same problem trying to find a good replacement head for my own XJ.

Hey Rockrod, I just checked my 01 and found nothing. So I assume they either have a TUPY or no mark at all ? No mark being the preferred result.

XJs never got the TUPY head from the factory, it didn't come along till 02 or 03 and can only be found in the newer WJ/TJs. You want the TUPY mark, that is the designation of being a revised head casting to correct the cracking issue.

Ah so I had it all confused. Damn it I thought I cleared the 0331 hurdle. So if I see the 0331 without the TUPY my XJ is a potential carrier of the diseased cyl head. Are the 0331 numbers on the intake or distributor side ?

If you're asking about the '91 in your profile, it doesn't have the 0331 head. That's a '00-up part.

The "0331" mark is on the driver's side of the head, roughly even with the oil fill port, but it's covered by an aluminum heat shield(at least it is on both my '00 and '04) The "TUPY" mark is viewable from the oil fill port, directly between the rockers, and it is very noticeable. Just look straight down through the hole(requires standing on the bumper.)

My other car is also a Jeep,.. and so is the other one,.. and that one too. How many do you own before it's "a herd" ?

Here, this might help:
Images are thumbnail links to larger photos at photobucket.com
Non tupy head . . . . . . . . . . . . Tupy head
. . .

Link to non-tupy head photo
Link to tupy head photo

Both photos are aligned photo-top to back of engine/bottom to front. The "0331" casting mark is under the heat shield at the right of the photo(driver's side of the vehicle)

Ah,.. the ever-popular problem:
"Fill out your profile!"
"For which Jeep?"
"For the one your asking about!"
"What? You want me to change my profile every time one of those 6 bas****s has a problem?"
