just do a quick search on how to wire your stock e-fan to a switch, that way when you hit traffic you can flip it on instantly, problem solved

its a cheap easy mod, you just need 15$ in parts/wiring from radio shack or the like.

good job bud. I too have a similar setup on my XJ. I did a couple things different though.... jegs.com has a sweet A-pillar mount for the autometer gauge i used. It fits like a glove and looks OEM. Also, for the backlighting of the gauge, i just tapped into the lighting for the heating and ac control board. So know your new gauge will now dim with all the OEM gauges. Works pretty slick.

Probably will work exactly the same on a 96. Cutting the trans lines is no big deal. You gotta get used to that kind of work eventually if you own a cherokee.

Any reason why the next level up B&M tranny cooler wouldn't work?

You used 70268 - 13000 BTU

But that one is on back-order - and I'm thinkin this mod's gonna happen.

These are the other available B&M coolers:

70255 - 9,800 BTU
70264 - 14,400

Looks like the bigger one is 1.5" deep, vs. the .75" deep. the 14,400 BTU model is actually 1.5" shorter though..

I guess for that matter, how about the smaller one.

Anyone have opinions on that?

the only thing would be more air restriction for the rest of the cooling system... There are people running huge coolers so I think any cooler would work.

Should fit. Mine has room for a thicker one, but it will be a little tight to the AC rad.

phattysrt,
Do you have a part number. This mod is creeping higher on the list!

Great mounting location. I recently mounted a guage in the dash and ordered an extra temp sensor to install in the drain plug of the T/C case. This way I can use a rocker switch to monitor Trans or T/C with the same guage.

Just curious of how things are since bypassing the rad? I would think it would run cooler except that you've lost intake on the rad becuase of the bigger tranny cooler?

I'm going to bypass my radiator becuase like a moron I stripped the fitting in a rush -- nice -- and am wondering if it really makes much difference in engine temps (I'd think cooler) since the trans fluid no longer runs through the rad. I've got a '98 with towing package so it has the small cooler on it also -- so bypassing the radiator might actually help a little -- but maybe not.

Anyway, I'm looking for feedback there.

Very helpful post. I have been wanting to install a temp gauge and cooler on my Jeep for a while and this is a bit help.

I do have one semi-related question... can I replace the majority of the cooler line with rubber hose ? My lines are crimped and leaking at that point. So, do I need to buy all new lines or can I simply cut them behind the leak and replace that point forward to the new cooler with rubber hose ?

I can't think of a good reason why not... but perhaps someone here will know for sure.

I wouldn't use rubber hose, I'd upgrade to steel braided lines and AN fittings. I'd do that over replacing the steel lines anyday, it'd be around the same price tooo

cooler line routing

thanks for the thread. this information was super helpfull. I have cured my over heating problem just by bypassing the radiator and installing an aux. tranny cooler.

Here's a picture of the way I hooked my gauge up.

Grounded to the end of the metal tranny line, flare fittings w/ hose barbs. All tranny lines from this point forward are rubber.
