I found this thread on google and its amazing, cheers to ya You've done exactly what I want to do with my XJ. I didnt like the idea of cutting the tranny lines for a t-connector though, wouldn't there be an easier way of making a T using the new hose from the B&M cooler kit? - btw Ive got that same cooler sitting in my garage.

Oh the galvanized T connector you used, how did you fit the cut tranny lines into it? Did you have to thread them on somehow or are they crush fittings?

Happy trails,
Xan

The t-fitting I used, that was included in the B&M trans temp gauge kit, uses compression fittings to connect the tubing.

Nice writeup. There is one thing though. I would highly recommend getting a tubing cutter from an auto parts store (Under $10 for the mini one). Using any kind of friction cutter will introduce metal shavings into the fluid (not much and probably wouldn't be a problem). I just hate the idea of putting metal into my tranny when it can be avoided.

Ya I was thinking the same thing about the metal shavings. AWESOME WRITE UP BTW! Quick question, what size T fitting did you use? I think I might just swing by a local parts store tonight on my way home from work. It would help to know the exact name of the part so I can get it.

Yeah, good point, I've actually updated the write-up on my new site to recommend using a tubing cutter already. In hindsight a tubing cutter definitely would've been the best tool to use, I just didn't have one at the time. The dremel disc I used was one of the paper-thin ones, not the fiberglass ones, so any debris was more like metal dust, not shavings, not sure which would be better to have in there though, haha.

I don't know/remember what size the tubing is off the top of my head though, the B&M gauge kit came with two fittings and I just used the one that fit.

I think the tubing is 3/8", but don't quote me. I bought an autometer sport-comp gauge so it only came with the sensor and not the t-fitting. Wasn't hard to find at the local hardware store though.

Agreed... I used the supplied fittings in my install and had no issues. I bought a tubing cutter for like $8.00 and it was awesome. Only driped out a few drops of fluid and no metal in the lines. I read this thread, mounted my cooler in nearly the same spot, and it has been awesome.

Pulled my 2700 pound trailer all over, temp never got above 170.

B&M FTW!!

So everyone installs the cooler in place of, rather than along with, the cooler inside the radiator?

Is that because it's easier to do, or would using both coolers cause the tranny to run too cool?

It's not a cooler in the radiator, it's a heat exchanger, and if anything it only serves to HEAT up the transmission fluid. THAT is why a lot of us have bypassed it and that's why if you're putting a cooler inline with the radiator that you want to put it after the radiator.. Sometimes you do want this heating effect on the fluid though, like if you live in a colder climate, because it helps get the trans fluid up to proper operating temperature sooner.

I ran mine in series with the heat exchanger in the rad. Easy to change if I need to bypass it, but I wanted to see what temps it ran with. It runs all day long near the bottom of the scale at 165 ish with it in line.

i will be doing this soon but i have a few questions on mounting.in tampa the temps get high so i dont really wan to have the jeep sitting in traffic for 30 mins with the ac on and then to have it overheat. would it be wise to install an electric fan on the cooler and place the cooler somewhere maybe behind the bumper?or anywhere else?
