Love the write up. I chose the same spot for my Jeep tranny temp gauge. I used the B&M gauge and hit the chrome surround with some textured dark grey crinkle paint. This really helped integrate the gauge into the overall look of the existing interior. I also hit the galvanized mounting brackets for the cooler with flat black paint to make it a little less in-your-face. Check out the pics.

The 4WD gear selector is definitly in the way, but I can still read the numbers. Also, I use mine most when I'm off-road crawling around the desert -- when I'm usually in 4H or 4L. In that case, it's a clean line of sight.

Very nice write up. I found this while looking for information on the subject for when I do my install at the end of May. I might also do a temp gauge just so I know what's going on - especially since now I know of one that fits the interior looks of my ZJ. However, did you ever put a resistor in there to make the bulb dimmer? I just did this in physics, maybe I could actually find the right size to make it look match....or I can be lazy and guess/check.

Sorry for the delay guys, I've been really busy drinking myself silly now that classes are over.

Yes, the gauge is mostly blocked in 2HI, but I have no reason to be concerned with trans temps in 2HI, so it's not an issue.

No, I do not yet have pics of the T-fitting, and I know I've told several of you I'd have em up, and I'm sorry, but it'll prob happen tomorrow or Monday. I used a galvanized 3/8" T I think, and the supplied Autometer probe fits in there with one of the supplied adapters.

As for the resistor idea in line with the gauge, no, I didn't think of it, but it's not a bad idea. I'd actually rather make everything else brighter, as these OE gauges are pretty dim...

And in case I didn't mention this on page 1, I did take much of my design from Jason's writeup, and he deserves props for having the 'original' writeup done, though I did end up mounting my T in the soft line and I didn't want to flush the entire trans for debris.

Updates soon to come, thanks again for all the compliments.

Really wish I had some black spray paint around when I did my install. Can't see the upper brackets, but the lower one sticks out pretty well. Catches my eye every time I look at the front of my XJ. Too much of a pain to take off and paint, but I guess I can do it whenever I get a new front bumper.

Yes. I had originally mounted it in front of the mechanical fan, but that blocked WAY too much air. It's now mid-grill, and while it does run hotter, it isn't excessive. It will, however, overheat if you idle with the A/C on for more than 15 min. I'm planning on dropping in a 3 row all metal unit soon.

I agree, my lower bracket is also a bit of an eyesore.

FWIW, I've got mine mounted directly in front of the mech fan and haven't seen any problems yet. The reason I mounted it there was because that section of the grille would always have constant airflow.

My engine runs slightly warmer than before, but still not really over 210*, and I attribute that to the fact that I bypassed the radiator, so it's no longer using the transmission fluid as a heat sink anymore.

Also, I guess it should be noted that I'm running a 3-core radiator.

I mounted mine in the same place as well. Just used a digital gauge rather than a mechanical.
