Transfer Case Help

hey im a wj guy but my buddy has a 96 cherokee with the strait 6 and he blew his t-case the np231. were going down to some property we own in less than a week so without him knowing were gonna throw in for a new t-case. the question i need answered is what years will fit without any modification?

there was a input spine count change, I think it was in 96, not sure. One was 21 spline and the newer one is 23. The output on the 99 will be sealed on the output shaft. The output on the 96 may be sealed on the shaft, or on the driveshaft. 96 was the split year. A lot of midyear changes gearing up for the new models. Some 96's have 27 spline rear axles, some have 29. OBD computer changes as well. Sorry.

90+ is 23 spline,so the 99 t-case will work in the 96.
