Which transfer case do I have?

I know that I should be able to look at the back of the transfer case and see the tag but there is a problem with that. I have a 1993 Cherokee Sport. When someone else was driving it the drive shaft from the transfer case to the front diff and about 2/3rds of the transfer case broke off. Completely missing from the vehicle. This was on the freeway about a month ago. They towed it and cannot remember what section of the road they were on or I would go look for it. Anyway, I need to replace the transfer case and the front drive shaft. The part of the transfer case that should have the tag is laying along the freeway somewhere. Is there any other way to tell if it is a 231 or a 242? I was hoping to pull the old one and replace it all at the same time so I am hoping that I can tell which case while it is still in the vehicle. Any suggestions?

Thanks

When selecting a 4wd function, do you have a "full time" option?

the MOST simple way to find out what you have: Look at your 4wd shifter, does it say:

2HI
|
4HI
|
N
¯¯|
....4LO

If it shows up like that, you have a 231.

The selector looks just like that.
2H
4H
N
4L

the slot jogs to the right a little between neutral and 4H I think. But those are certainly the four choices on the selector.

Here is another newbie question, is there a difference between a 231, NP231, and an NP231J? Do I have to know the right number of splines to buy the new one?
