Which Transfer case is this?
And is it any good?
It says "231 J" under the New Process crest on the tag...........I thought 96's had a 242 or something. Is this T-case any good?

That's a Jeep NP231 or Conmmand trac. It's rated for more torque load than a NP242, but doesn't have the full time option.
LOTS of aftermarket support for it in everything from SYE choices, wide chain kits, overhaul kits, and 4 to 1 kits.

Thanks balloo. I gotta change the rear seal on it, and I wanted to be sure before I blindly started buying seals. MINOR leak. Do you think I should wait until I do my SYE?
Thx agan, Tom |

Count the rear input gear splines and figure out if it's 21 or 23 splines. If it has a year written on it or is identified as what year, it will make it easier to determine compatability.
Seal shouold eb cheap and easy to replace, but make REAL sure it's just time that broke it down. Check the output shaft bearing and make sure the shaft doesn't have any side to side or up down play in it.

I have a 93 with a NV or NP 242 comand trac. The 231 is a select trac that I have in my 98 TJ.

Usage The NP242 is used in Grand Cherokees (ZJ) and Cherokees (XJ). Also known as the Selec-Trac transfer case. OP Listen to Balloo93 he knows what he is talking about. |

selec tracs do have some drawbacks as they are slightly weaker when youre doing hardcore wheeling and they sometimes are harder to switch from mode to mode but I wouldnt trade it for the world as mine is a 98% on road rig. in full time they are great in snow and rain and as soon as the snow hits the ground I just leave it in full time for weeks on end. much better handling than part time as they dont understeer around corners and twisty roads. its about the same as all wheel drive. if its really deep snow or off road trails I put it in part time. kinda the best of both worlds.
other drawbacks are less aftermarket support but it is what it is. if youre a hardcore wheeler the command track is better but its up to you.
