which transfer case?
Hi everyone,
Last week I picked up my third jeep and my first XJ!! I am slowly starting to add some bits to it. The first thing I want to add is some protection for the important stuff underneath. I think I am in need of a transfer case skid plate first. I was at rusty's off road and there are two versions of his transfer case plate. One for the NP 213 and NP242 transfer cases. My questions is..........................How do I tell what transfer case do I have? My XJ is a 98 sport, 2-door, 4.0L, 5-spd row the boat. Thanks in advance for your help!! Josh

I believe that you have the NP231, but look at the tech sticky at the top of the page. It may be listed there.

It seems you are correct, after opening my eyes I checked out the XJ spec section and indeed states that I should have a NP 231. Thanks for the help!!

If you have full time 4wd on the shift lever, you have the NP242. If you only have 2H, 4H(part time), N, and 4L, you have the NP231. I dont think the factory ever mated the 242 with the AX-15 transmission, so I'd bet you have the 231.
