Trans TOO sporty sometimes!

I have a question regarding the shift programming of the automatic in my í96 Cherokee Sport.

I hate it. Itís TOO sporty. I do like it sometimes, but a lot of times, NOT. There are times when it down-shifts, sometimes two gears, when I really donít want it to. Like when Iím towing a trailer up a slight (and I do mean slight) grade with the air conditioning on. It hunts back and forth Ė drives me crazy, and I know itís not good for the tranny. If Iím driving on basically level freeway at about 65 and want to speed up a little to get around a semi, all I really want is a little extra grunt, not a sudden burst of acceleration. This thing kicks down a gear. I don't need or want that - the 4.0 has plenty of grunt without downshifting.

Iíve had the tranny checked out, and been told that itís fine, mechanically.

Are there different shift program modules? My í90 Laredo had a switch on the dash to change the shift program Ė can that be retrofitted to my í96?

Help! I like my í96, for the most part, but this thing drives me crazy!

I agree with you...we have 02 Grand Cherokee with 4.0 and auto and ours does the same thing. We traded in our 01 pt cruiser for this and it didn't have to double shift down like this guy does. I get it when going up slight grades with no trailer and no one else @ 65 mph....
