Tranny cooler and power steering cooler

i picked up a Flex-a-lite transmission cooler (7.5"x 12" x 3/4", with 16,000 GVW)

i was originally planning on running it inline with the cooler in the radiator, but i'm now thinking of running the transmission on just the external cooler.

And with the unused cooling power of my 3-row radiator, i would run the power steering cooler line with it.

What are everyone's thoughts on this?

It sounds like a great use of whats available to you. I have to ask whats the use of having a power steering cooler unless youre running hydraulics off it?

well why not have one? i have a leak somewhere in my power steering system, and whenever it gets hot, i lose my fluid almost instantly. i am going to be replacing much of the power steering components anyway, but with the cooler there i will have that extra bit of insurance.

I dont think it would hurt anything . wouldnt you want to keep all "fluids" as cool as possible. granted PS fluid doesnt take beating like ATF in what it does. But it would seem like a good idea if you are already going to be doing a "tear down" why not throw it in. Extra "insurance" isnt a bad idea especially on PS fluid IMO.

speaking of tranny cooler, whats the best way to plumb it? I plan on having it in front of the fan. I looked on the jeepins writeup and I guess I am just not paying attention because I am tired but what loop would I like to run? Rad->transcooler->trans->back to the transcooler?? Sorry I am tired

I got the B&M through jegs.com for $50

Coolers always help. Especially in those damn Ford POS Aerostars. Last one we had was runing FIVE transmission coolers in it, plus the rad, plus the power steering cooler, plus the a/c rad.

i got it from the local show-truck shop. i got a $35 gift certificate for christmas and figured i'll need a tranny cooler in the future, so i picked one up. i think it was about $40 and change.

back on topic: i basically wanted to know if just the external cooler would safely work with 33" tires. and i'm guessing it is.

Jason's Jeepin.com write up is about bypassing the stock rad cooler completely. I ran the B&M super cooler after the stock rad routing then back to the trans. That is the recommended method.

I used the In line B&M trans temp gauge as well. Great extra to have.

Yeah it took me about 20 mins to install base on having a crappy cutting insturment. I went from the ATF out ->rad ->tranny cooler->out the tranny cooler back into the ATF in.

which line is the return line on the tranny? The top or the bottom one coming out of the trans? Or the one of the back or the one on the front of the tranny?

do you have a link to the inline temp guage? i've been wanting to get one, but i didn't want to tap a hole in my tranny and this would be a nice solution.

would just the external cooler provide suffecient cooling for my aw4 with 33" tires?
