I think it would be a good idea. I also like the B&M cooler because of the temperature bypass when the fluid is cold. On my Jeep I put the guage sending unit on the send line. That way I know what temperature the transmission is actually running at, not what temperature the fluid is returning to it after it came from the cooler. You could put the cooler on the side of the radiator with the aux electric fan, wire up a manual switch to the fan, and that way when you notice that the trans temp is rising, flip the switch.

I did the same, so I know how hot the fluid is before cooling. That B&M dropped the temps by about 20* and that's in the summer.

you'll also need this to hook up the gauge:

i'm getting the same B&M supercooler jason used, and installing it in a week or so. i will do a writeup just cuz i always do writeups.

and this new line of autometer gauges (the 'GS' series) looks like it should match the OE XJ gauges (97-01, at least) when its lit up at night...

You could always buy another sending unit (and the fittings) and put one in each line. Then use a SPDT switch to switch the guage from reading one to the other.

i guess everyone stopped reading after the first paragraph.

if i were you, i'd shroud it and put a fan on it. then the mod would be worth wile...and you can get some aluminum sheet from autozone, a rivot gun and some wooden dowels to shape it. i figure a 18000gvwr cooler with 3 90mm fans would work wonders. and locate it high so water stays out.

the cooler is useless WHEN THERE'S NO AIR FLOW ACROSS IT...and it doesnt have a radiator shroud or it's own fan...not for 50 bucks. the ONLY cooler i'd get is one with a built in fan. the only one i know of is B&M's unit, and it's 200 bucks for a 4" x 4" square with a 3" computer fan on it...wooptie doo...i'm not paying 200 bucks for a mini-me radiator and a $2 computer fan.

any way, back to the point...if you're crawling, like you would be over rocks or in mud...then there will be no air flow across the cooler...and i dont care how big it is or how long it takes to cross...it's not long enough to SUFFICIENTLY cool anything. you may drop 5*f but what's that do, 4k life miles out of the trans??? ah...worth it.

for those who dont read the whole post...here's the wrap up:
cooler with a shroud and fans, worth it....no shroud and no fans, dont even bother.

did you never consider the fact that the XJ radiator, with little / no airflow, running a trail, sits @ AT LEAST 210 degrees, if not higher? and when fluid leaving a trans cycles through a 210*+ radiator, it gets heated up, instead of cooled?

therefore, if your trans is running at 180*, and the fluid cycles through a cooler (assuming no fan / shroud ), it will AT LEAST not gain any heat. then you add the fact that because a cooler is sitting in front of the radiator, and the radiator has a shroud / fan, there will be some air flowing past it, dropping temps even more.

so you say its a 5* drop - i say, even if there's NO HEAT EXCHANGE AT ALL (which is impossible unless its 180* out) you're dropping your trans temps ~30*. is that worth $50? any day of the week.

I run the same setup as Jason's write-up.

Not going to argue semantics here, but I have the cooler in front of the Auxillary fan. The electric fan is wired into a switch as well as the factory plug.

This has worked very well in the 3 years its in. First trip out was to Paragon in August, 90+ degree day. Using the elec. fan more than not, the trans temp went to the yellow area, but never the red that day.

93 xj, AW4, 170,000 miles and still going strong.

I have the B&M and love it now...but right away it gave me a headach because i routed my hoses goofy and it caused one of them to get hit by the fan blade...so be careful where you route them but otherwise it works great and easy to install

I didnt see an inline fuse in that howto. put one as close to the battery as possible on the B+ wire. use whatever rating the regular aux fan fuse is.
