Tranfer Case sector shaft seal

My sector shaft seal is leaking on my 242 transfer case. It is the seal that the shaft to select 4hi , 4low etc goes through. Does anyone know if this seal can be changed with the tranfer case still in the vehicle? Any help is appreciated.

Got some good news and some bad news.
The good news is that the problem is an "O" ring around the shaft. Replace the "O" ring, problem solved. Now for the bad news.
I looked in the manual and they show that to replace the "O" ring you have to open up the case. Working inside the case, you remove the shaft, a bushing and the seal, reverse to install. That's the manual, in real life it would be nice if you can use a pick tool to pry out the old and then push a new in its place. If anybody has done it, tell us.
Good luck.

yeah I read tha in the manual as well. I was hoping someone had done it the way you described without dropping and splitting the case. If anyone has please let me know.

so this thread is a little old,... But i ran into the same problem and was not about to split my case open to replace that stupid oring.

i pried out the plastic retainer and then used a sewing needle thing to get the oring out, i just stabbed the oring with the needle and didnt even scratch the case at all. it was my last ditch effort that ended up working amazingly well.
