Toyota synchros in AX5 ?

There is an AX5 in my XJ. Recently it has become hard to shift down into
first gear unless I am stopped. I suppose it is the synchro. No problem
shifting in other gears at other times. Here are my questions:

1. Can I just replace the synchro gear or will I most likely need to replace
also the associated parts: the synchro sleeve, stop rings, springs, keys?

2. I am in Africa and Toyota parts are abundant here. Can I use Toy
synchros, which are not brass as I understand, for a corresponding Aisin
transmission? Anyone ever heard of doing this?

Thanks for looking at this.

I would have to assume that you can use Toyo synchros, as the AX5 is, after a fashion, a Toyo transmission. However, I can't without a doubt confirm this. See if you can find detailed specs on each, and make sure that they match. If the measurements all match, I don't see why you couldn't use them.

here is part of an old post from Greg 55. Sadly the whole thing has disappeared. He says the innards are the same.

Thanks for the reply and the current link. The thread Greg55 posted (on a
now defunct forum) was a great help to me back in 2008. It produced the
idea to swap in the Toy engine and save the Jeep from the scrap heap.
I wonder if he is still picking parts somewhere.

As for the the subject, I have found several aftermarket parts sellers that
advertise synchro ring sets that will work for both the AX5 and Toy G52
(and sets for the AX15 and Toy R151, 154).

Maybe I can get the transmission taken apart next week and see what
needs to be done.

After replying to you I sent him a PM on the Pirate 4x4 but have not received a reply.
Good luck getting your trans fixed. I often forget how quickly I can get parts here in Chicago USA
