Toyota 8"???
Ok, ive been reading a lot about it on this forum, NAXJA, and the toyota section of pirate4x4, and i have to know if anyone has put in a toyota 8" rear axle in the XJ? I know it would require moving the spring perches, and finding an axle that would fit the perches without being too close to the baking plates, I am looking for an axle with 4.10's, stock would be best, then high strength, like a D44 but i have read a toyota is 30 spline and has better ground clearance, and i would not put in the e-locker, just go with the Aussie. and it has available disc brake conversions and the 2wds have twin e-brake cables, like an xj, and 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern, like an xj. it seems like it would be as much work as a ford 8.8 but better right out of the jy, with no c-clips and that nonsense, and it wasnt built by ford, big plus! So far the best housing would be the 2wd V6 '86-95 rear axle~ 58.5" WMS-WMS, but it says the gears dont come in 4.10 stock... and you would have to put in a 4cyl diff to get the gears... then the aussie would just drop in. and i know i would have to get a different ds but could i like sye, then put a fds from an xj and put a flange to yoke thing or somethin? and this is a dd so everything has to be pretty rock solid. Any suggestions would be great and pics too, i'm not sold on the toyota, but i think a d44 from an xj would be hard to find as cheap as this yota axle. and btw waht is the length from the outside of the leaf perch to the outside of the other on an xj?

Yota axles suck. Okay, there's plenty of 'evidence' out there to contradict my statement, buuut.
The reality is a toyota 8" actually has a 7.8" ring gear. For the sake of comparison, your D35 has a 7.625" ring gear (IIRC). A D44 has a 8.5", and an 8.8 an 8.8"... So, what does this mean? Well, the toyota ring gear is simply NOT large enough to provide decent strength. A yota gets away with it as yotas are all underpowered, at least all the older ones were. And a 4cyl thirdmember is a really bad idea, they're even weaker. You could probably run it, and it might even work, of course you didn't state your desired tire size and that factors into it. Personally, I know what would happen if I had one (I'd try to break it, and I'd succeed). I know of another import axle that is mucho better in the strength department, is cheaper than a toy axle, but has the wrong bolt pattern (6x5.5). Some of the toy guys 'upgrade' to them, but not many... Oh, XJ leaf perches are 43" centre-centre IIRC. The last time I swapped a rear into an XJ was a LONG time ago, so you'll want to verify that. Notice I measured centre-centre, it's the accurate way (perch width is variable, it can be narrower or wider than the leaf spring and still work) |

Ok so what axles do they use? And right now i'm running 31x10.50s and wouldnt go much higher for a while but would want to be able to run at most like a 35 maybe? i dunno this axle swap would cost big time so new tires are out of the question for a while but i would want it to be able to hold larger tires while still being locked with an aussie...
