totalled

so tonight i basically totalled my cherokee. i was backing through a parking space to move out of traffic and didnt see the pole. i dont know how i didnt see it and i still cant believe this happened. heres the carnage:

even though i was only going about 10mph, you can see how the kid in my backseat broke it.

so at the moment im looking for cherokees in my area for cheap that i can just put my drivetrain into or something cheap enough to get me to work everyday. i cant even believe i did this to myself. oh AND i snapped my rear driveshaft and had to pull out the slip yoke and drive home in 4wd.

what are my options as far as what from my 94 4.0 5 spd will swap into another chero? can i swap my drivetrain into a newer chero?

go easy on the flaming. even though i was stupid about this i still just lost my favorite vehicle.

How fast do you move in parking lots?

i find it very hard to believe that you did that at 10mph. but that sucks about your XJ. any plans on getting another?

if you were going 10mph, then the pole was going 15mph....

too bad they didnt paint the pole some bright colo... oh wait

sorry, just messing.

why do you want to "swap your drivetrain" ? your car is stock. I dont see how thats totaled either. You could bend that back yourself, get a new hatch (under $100) and a new driveshaft( $50, junk yard) and a new bumper($30 junk yard) and you'd be back in action.

drop your gas tank, pull up your rug, and get banging.

by the way, how the hell did you snap the driveshaft?

i bent the rear most crossmember which in turn pulled the framerails in a little bit. i think the shaft snapped because i was still on the gas when i hit and since the wheels stopped dead the torque just snapped it.

im still going JY shopping tomorrow to see what i can find but if the parts are too expensive i might as well just pick up a cherokee that doesnt run and put my parts in there.

i think the damage is so intense because a) i had 2 other people in the car and b) i was still accelerating when i hit.

i might just be in denial of my own stupidity but im thinking the reason i didnt see it was because the landscape behind me had a lot of different details and it was dark so the pole just blended into everything behind it... this suckssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

You hit that going way faster than 10 mph. Unless you romp on it in parking lots and just hold your foot down, there is no way in any world you were moving that slow. I have hit trees on the trail at 10mph and barely left more than a slight dent and I don't even have a rear bumper. I think this is a case of showing off for your friends and being very young.

As for your jeep. You can fix it, I don't see why you are freaking out.

yeah i wouldnt call that totaled, just a few weekends of working in the shop.
i "Totaled" the front of my'n, had to replace front hood shroud, hood, bumper. the Entire front Axel assembly, Radiator, those dumb fans in front. Drive Shaft kicked back when my front Axle Got smashed back, causing my T-case To be split in half, and my left fender. Pretty much got all my parts Super Cheap from U-pull it yards. if i would have been going 20mph faster, or hadn't had a skid plate(slowed me down when going over a small concert block) the Telephone pole would have killed me. ^.^

Yank the frame rails out as straight as you can (a come-a-long (manual winch) will be your best friend), slap on a junkyard hatch and rear bumper, used rear-seat back and a drive shaft and you should be good to go - that XJ looks to be pretty far from gone ... in fact it looks like most of my projects do at when I start 'em!

i 180'd on ice doing 40 and hit the same spot on my '01 (telephone pole)...i didn't dent it quite that bad (don't ask me how), but after a new rear bumper, rear hatch, some touch up paint, and some straightening i was good as new...

No you hit it because you weren't paying attention, don't blame the landscape.

Back when I worked at National Car Rental, I did the exact same thing, except in an 05 Malibu, and it was a concrete base to a similar pole.

I'm going with the "You were doing way faster than 10mph and not paying attention" crowd.

Just to show how mature we are lets not sit here and call the dude a lair. That gains nothing....Like he said stupid mistake...lets move on!!!

Man, go with StevetheFolkie's advice on this one. Fix that stuff yourslf and move on, unless there is other damage that you haven't found and/or mentioned yet. Hope it all works out for you.

What is the insurance company going to give you or are you just figuring to fix it out of pocket?

im going out of pocket.

this morning i got out and got the hatch and bumper off. i looped a chain around the rear crossmember that was bent to a tree and drove. it BASICALLY straightened it out but the new hatch will never seal and the new bumper will take a lot of persuasion. luckily, the shackle hangers are in tact and SEEM to be straight enough. i took her around the block to check for anything not feeling right and it feels fine, just a little breezy.

before

after
