Anyone ever drop a socket in the bell housing while changing a crank sensor? If so is there an "easy" way to recover them and if not will it effect the flywheel?
NickInTimeFilms dropped one of the bolts into the housing when installing his new motor. It is at 4:45 in the following video:
He barely could get the bolt out through the bottom, but that probably depends on how it fell and where it is sitting. He was lucky that it just fit under the corner where the gap is largest between the housing and the fly wheel.
If the hole on top is big enough to drop the socket into, is it possible to fish a magnet or grabber down through and retrieve it back up? Perhaps a magnet on a string?
But I wouldn't want a socket in that housing, at minimum I would think that it is going to get bounced around in there from time to time and make a heck of a racket. At worst, it might get jammed between the fly wheel and housing while bouncing around. That surely would not be good.
oh... the inspection cover. I wonder if it dropped to the bottom of the housing even. Looked all around the area and didnt see the socket or u joint that was attached. Yes it was a bad afternoon!
Manual? Pop that slave cylinder out. two 1/2 inch (13mm) nuts on the drivers side of the bellhousing (I think its the same for an XJ and a TJ). you should be able to see just about everything in the bell housing with a flashlight, and you can almost stick your hand in the hole, so you could definitely get a magnet tool or a set of chinese claws (Mr. Fingers as I call them) and snag that socket right out of there.
Hello cruiser54. Been a while since you've lent a hand. I pulled the inspection plate and was able to find the u-joint but no sign of the socket.Ran a flex magnet around the bottom of the housing and up the sides as far as it would go. Looks like the starter comes off next.
Just back from the store and I could hear the socket bouncing around against the flywheel. Time to let it cool down and check again. Fricken starter didn't want to come out. Got tired so I'll try again in a few days
cruiser54 if you're ever in my area, stop in as I owe you a cold one. Pulled the starter and no sooner did the starter come off the housing , the socket dropped right out!
Thank you!
Oh can you do anything about my other half's propensity for texting me while being under the jeep?????
I think they all have that going on, if I'm out there for more than 20 she starts texting asking why it's taking so long
