TJ/YJ fell through... thinking about XJ

OK so I was going to get a Wrangler as a weekend wheeler/something to haul junk around in, but it fell through. They're just too expensive for me (a student) as a second car.

I'm not looking at 2-door Cherokees. I've always liked the 2-door looks, and the interior room would be nice. I've found a white 1990 with 4.0l and 5-speed and A/C. It's got 112k mi on it and they're asking $3995. It looks pretty much bone stock.

I also found a '92 red w/160k mi for $5000.

Is there anything to look out for on 90-92 Cherokees? I'm planning on up to 4" lift with slightly larger tires.

The only thing I know about older Cherokees is that pesky 2.8l motor that blows up after 100k, but these are both 4.0l.

Thanks for any info.

This will be a replacement for the WJ, I know it won't be as plush. I'm looking for something that I can bounce off trees/rocks and not consider jumping off a cliff.

It pays to shop around. The 92 w/160k for $5000 seems a bit high. Before you buy an XJ, be sure to look for the obvious, all u-joints, be sure the front axle engages, check the front wheel bearings for play(esp. on high milage ones). You can bring the price down if you can find some items that need replacing. On the 4.0, check the air cleaner for signs of blow-by.
BTW, my 2.8 has 164,000 miles on it, and it still going strong!
Good luck on your XJ search, happy wheelin'!
