thump or pop sound during turn

Whenever i go and make a relativly sharp turn or quick turn a thump or pop sound is made underneath my jeep. I know its either tires or lift cause it didnt happen stock. Does anyone know what this might be and it is dangerous. It doesnt sound too threatening, but still

Does it happen when you turn the wheel sharply to the right, but not when you turn left?

Mine does it from time to time. Usually when turning and braking at the same time. It will also do it if I bump over a curb at a roll sometimes. This started after my lift also. I have looked through the dirt to see if I could see where it was hitting (if it is actually hitting) and found nothing so far. It has not been as frequent lately. I think it has something to do with the position of the spring when under a bit of extra load (i.e. the braking and turning) and how the spring shifts when you turn. I have run it up on all kinds of inclines, turned the wheel this way and that and can never reproduce the sound. I just say keep an eye on your nuts and bolts! If they are all tight I say your fine. Maybe just needs a bigger lift That's what I'm doing!

BTW, what type of lift do you have? Mine is one of those econo lifts. I'm thinking that my new lift with longer springs may stop it all together.....

My RE disconnects were the source of most of my post-lift noises. Its easy to eliminate or confirm them as suspect, just disconnect them and drive around (carefully) and listen for noises when to turn. If there are no noises whatsoever, but they return when you put the disconnects back on, there is your answer.

I asked about the left vs right because on mine, when I turn far to the right, the drag link rubs on the lower link of the swaybar disconnect.

My Jeep will make that similar noise as well. Like you said, I have tried on all types of terrain to make it happen but cannot seem to find it. I have noticed though that every once in a while the tire will grab the fender flare on either side and make a loud pop if i turn and and the susp is flexed a bit. Could that be it?

I got a damn noise cus my exhaust is hitting my shackle on almost any kind of spring movement (boooo). but that's not a 'tuck' or 'crich'.

I'm completely stock and have noticed something similar. Although I describe the noice as more of a squeak. I can't ever reproduce it, but it seems like it only happens when making a sharp, low speed turn.

I had a noise from my exhaust rubbing my shackle also. I applied a lot of foot force and managed to move the pipe away. Now it only does it when I hit a large bump (pothole, etc.). I suppose you could heat and bend the pipe but had no way to do it at the time.....

As for my front end noise it definately more of a sharp clunk.

Have you tried lubing the front Universal Joints? Perhaps they may require a tad bit of maintenance. I know my '85 XJ was neglected on the front U's, and the right one clanks just going down the road, and the left pops and thuds when making turns. Having it in four-wheel-drive only makes this noise louder.

Even if this isn't the problem, make sure you keep those zerts full of lube and the contact points well-greased. I use white lightening myself.

Hope it helps.

I have the same problem on my stock 88. And wolf, now that I think of it, it does sound the same as when my rear u-joints went out. Will have to check em tommorrow.
