I cant speak about the stuff in the link posted above, being a BRIT, but in my experience ....hard lacquer is used on Alu rims, and its damned hard work to remove.....
unless vapour blasted

Well...if it were me, and if its those lattice alu rims, they will be very difficult to keep in a polished only state. Theres way to many nooks and crannies... if they're just like fat 5 spokes or sumfin, then they would be much easier to keep in a natural polished state.

Horrible lattice ?.....get em smooooooooth vapour blasted/polished and re-coated with oven baked clear coat. Otherwise if left uncoated they will fur up , like alloy tends to do after a while

Well while we are on the subject, I have a question. I have aluminum polished rims with clearcoat but they look like crap from the salt on the road. Can I use chrome polish so they shine again or is that a waste of time since they have a clearcoat. Thanks.

May end up costing more than just getting a set of after market rims. Get a estimate from a body shop.

I wouldn't even try to do them yourself, wheels are a PITA to get right as far as clear coating. Unless of course you have experience with that grade of clear coat.

MS...they may well look crap if the weather has gotten under the lacquer. While chrome polish does a fair job , alloy needs more of a "cutting" compound when its dul, and if it has a clear coat on, then you will need to get rid of this beforehand.....its real hard work to get lookin good.

save yaselves a lot of mean hard work, and get a shop to do em.
Sure you have to pay, but they will look twice as good in a tenth of the time,

800 dollar, i cant be certain what you guys get as standard XJ rims, but yours may be a little easier to keep sweet. But still, having built several mo'bikes in my time, covered in polished billet add ons, i know what a huuuuge PITA alloy is to keep lookin nice.
I cant estimate a price dude, cos i live in the UK....we pay thru the nose for just about everything in this country.....my guess would be that its certainly gonna be cheaper for you than it would be for me.

You could check out powdercoating options. Some of the metallic powders are showing promise. Or you could just paint 'em black and call it good.
