Swing Away Tire Carrier

What year model jeeps came with stock swing away carriers. I am going to try to find one in a yard to mount on my 98 cherokee and need to know. Also would it support a 33 x 12.50.

I need to have a spare and dont want to carry it on my roof. The woods are to thick here.

Thanks,
Matt

None, all are dealer installed or aftermarket.

I found one at a junkyard. And I was thinking like you "Hey I'd like to mount my spare that way.", but it was pinched between two cherokees so I couldn't get a good look at it. I probably go back out there in a couple weeks.

They DID have one as an OEM option. The one I saw you would have to drill holes as it mounts to the rear right side of the XJ if you find a used one. I guess they did all that at the dealer. I saw one on ebay a couple weeks ago. I have seen one like the picture one ebay recently too.
I picked up an aftermarket one for my 96 off ebay recently that mounts behind the tail lights.
They can be found but be prepared to do some drilling.
BTW, the one in the picture is not the OEM one I saw. ????? I have seen those before though but didnt think it was OEM.

Some kid has that here on Campus. I dont trust to to be honest. It looks like there are just a couple screws going into the factory bumper. There might be something else but it looks kinda shady for anything other than stock tires

tire carrier

I actually found one at a junkyard, and if i remember right there are pop rivits hold some of the interior bracing together( so be prepared). But over all it wasent that hard of an install. I just had to place the brace inside of the body and drill hole so it would line up, second had to die grind part of bumper out so the latch mechimism would work also, then i just welded it to my bumper. I carry a 31'' tire on mine. But when i the carrier is swung all the way out my bumper moves a little because of all the weight. I think 1 of 2 things can solve this though for you case and your 33'' tire. 1( you could brace the edge of bumper where carrier mounts or 2( you could shorten the limiter strap on the so you still would be able to open hatch back, but not have the carrier start to swing downwards. All in all it was a very inexpensive mod compared to buying a name brand, and works well.

The one in the pics was a dealer installed option and is not OEM. It seems like we hash out this subject every month or two.
The only XJ OEM swing out carrier was available in the 80's XJ, maybe 'till 91?, but they can be fitted to all XJ's through 96.
IMO, the swing out carrier in the above pic is just as good if not better than the earlier OEM units.

Here's an excellent write up on installing a used OEM carrier from MadXJ.

Spare tire rack

My '94 Sport came off the lot with the swing-away spare tire rack. In all the years I have owned mine, I have only seen one other Cherokee with this rack. I have had several Cherokee owners ask me about it, and all I can tell them is that it came that way. Having the spare on the outside really helps open up the back end....LOTS more room.

I have a rear swing away in this style. I would be willing to sell it. What would anyone give me for it.
