swap 3.08 gears into auto cherokee?

Hi all, any one swap 3.08 rearend and front end into an 87 automatic cherokee? Did it make it run like a dog? My daughter has an 87 xj with 3.55's. The rearend is howling like mad. I have complete 3.08 front and rearends that I could put in. The jeep is used for her to go to school, about30 miles one way and I don't want to make it a turd. Thanks for your help.

I'd swap the rear but not the front as a temp fix. Remove the front DS and start looking for a cheapish 97+ 8.25 with 3.55s.

Stronger setup, less work, better use of time and money.

Do you think the 3.08 would be too tall for the 4.0/auto combo? She doesn't wheel it at all, just needs 4x4 for when it snows. She likes it better than a car, says she feels safer in it.

It can be done, but would be close to putting 32s or 33s on a stock 3.55 set.

MPG may go down some and a bit lower RPM on the highway. Tell her to keep it in 3rd and go for it.

you could I guess
I would run no larger than a 225 75 r15. possibly as small as a 205. or it ging to be a total slug.

I would look around on your local craigslist and at the local junkyard. 3.08 with the auto trans is gonna be terrible. If you're mechanically inclined enough to put in a new axle, maybe you can just fix the one your have. It's probably just a bad bearing or something
