I was reading the March issue of Petersen's 4wheel & Off Road, and came across an article about supercharging a 98 XJ with a 4in lift and 32in tires... Aside from the performance gains, the mileage rose from 14 to 17.
My question is, say I ran 33s, regeared to 4.56s, got around 15-16mpg, and then supercharged it, could I be getting 18 or 19mpg in a lifted, badass supercharged XJ?
Maybe dreams do come true

I read that. They said they got better MPG. ANNNND, they installed it on a high mileage engine.
My only concern is how much heat it would make in the summer under full boost. I already run close to 210, and severe beatings (often) bring that number closer to 240 in the summer time. It had no additional cooling, but I'm no superchatger expert.
Would the ECU need to be re-programmed, or did the kit come with a chip? I dont remember. I read it while taking a dump at my brother's, so I forget the details.

They didn't say anything about the heat. The XJ had 120k miles on it. They say the kit includes a supercharger, a new intake manifold, and a box of brackets, hoses, and fittings.
They say the kit was developed by Rick Rimmer and includes an Eaton supercharger.
I'd just look it up from there. Good luck! I hope you do it!

I am going to rebuild the 4.0 in my cherokee next spring. I saw that article and was intersted in it until I looked on the companys' website and it was about $3,700. That would blow my budget without even touching the engine. At that price I can get a 4.6 golen stroker.

My guess is if you have the supercharger, you're gonna use the power (at least a good bit of the time) and that doesn't sound like a fuel saving strategy to me.

$3700? No wonder they didn't mention the price in the magazine.

Yeah I just saw the $3700 price tag... Couldn't you stroke a 4.0L for a lot less than that? How would the performance gains compare?

Both would have you running 93oct, so fuel savings is out the window.
The S/C would make enough torque to break driveline parts pretty easily.
The stroker would prob. be a better idea, but its deffinately got its hidden expenses I've sure, prob. cost the same as the S/C, but make far less power/torque.
I really don't see the need. The 4.0L has all the power an off road rid would ever need, unless your doing dune races or something.
This coming from a guy that hates NA engines, and loves forced induction. I just don't think it makes sense on a cherokee. Or a wrangler.
My friend owns a 1980 yoda. Its 37whp 22R carb with 35'' tires weighs 3300LBS. Super capable. My 87' cherokee with a 4.0L Fuel injectioned engine with appox. 100whp weighs 3600LBS. with an automatic. I'd say, if you want more power, just re-gear. Even with a S/C its not going to be an SRT-6 or anything Its still going to be 160whp and 3500-ish LBS. Which is good for about a 15.9sec pass at the track
Just the fact that both make you run 93oct should count them out.
Now... Maybe if you had a D60 front/rear on 35'' tires, with an atlasII TC or some super extreme driveline that could handle the power while the axles are twisted etc.
People complain about are stock axles already, imagine with 70% MORE TORQUE !!!!
I'd say .5% of all jeep cherokees out there could survive hard trailing with a S/C for a while.

If you had them build it with lower compression than normal, sure.
