Stupid Things Jeep Did To Our XJs Thread

Jeep Cherokee's are a great vehicle and might be the most reliable Jeep.

But They're not perfect. Let's focus on the bad.

Let me start it off....

They put little piece of crap bolts in the upper shock mounts that break 100% of the time when changing shocks.

Didnt break on my jeep

but im confused, is this a jeep bashing thread? if so, i would like to point out that the alt location on the 4.0 is probably the worst idea that jeep ever had. What was jeep thinking? "HUmmm guys lets put the alt as close to the ground as possible so that every time this jeep see's mud/water it hits the alt."

I never understood why they saddled such a capable 4wd vehicle with such small tires. Although I guess, since the XJ basically started the SUV fad, they were originally aimed at the soccer Mom market.

But, It's a good thing for us that the soccer moms and yuppies moved on.

Edit:Aiming the xj at the soccer mom/yuppie market probably explains why they did a lot of what they did. It used to be sort of a status symbol to drive a cherokee kinda like bimmers, so they weren't often used as more than grocery getters(another good thing for us)

the fine people at amc used torx so people wouldnt do crazy things like remove their swaybar then drive like mario andretti then flip and burst into a pile of flames then sue amc for making the swaybar so easy to remove.

Hey it could happen.

amd compared to other vehicles most things on an xj make sense.

what i would have liked to see is a rubicon xj equipped with dual dana44's lockers, skids, recovery points and some mt/r's.

It's not 4.0's in general, but just XJs. TJ alternators are up top, not sure about YJs.

When it comes to torx bolts and similar things, I think that in the 80's the manufacturers were trying to make servicing your own vehicle harder so you would be more apt to bring it to the dealer for service. But then, I'm a little cynical.

BTW I think the same thing about "dealer only" parts.

Yes but for DC to put a torx head on the swaybar bolt that is pressed in is not only stupid but I think it was the brainchild of some sadistic engineer!

Every time I work on any vehicle I'd like to have a four letter word(or three) with the design engineers becasue I know why they did what they did; the almighty $$ It probably saved them a couple of pennies to do it that way. I work in the manufacturing field these days, and am never surprised at the things they do to save money. I mean it would be different if these things were elegant, win win type innovative solutions to problems, but too often they are just hack and slash cost cutting methods born of desperation by a struggling industry.

Edit: To sum it up, accountants have more pull(in too many cases) than engineers anymore.
