Stupid question, but........

I feel like an idiot asking this, but does it really matter which way you mount a shock?

It depends on the shock type. Most have a valve that requires them to be mounted a certain way. On higher end shocks there is an arrow or UP direction indicating install position. Some hydro shocks can be mounted either way. The majority of gas charged shocks can only be mounted one way.

Worst case, call the manufacturer and check with them if there are no markings.

It *can* (I would ask the manufacturer), but what with the weight of a live axle, do you really think you're saving anything significant by inverting a shock?
And then there is the cost of adapters needed to mount generic shocks...

shocks for an XJ can only be mounted 1 way, so it'd be impossible to put a shock on incorrectly inverted, unless you're doing some custom setup
