stupid evac check engine and smog check

I really need some fast help. I live in Las vegas and i own a 2001 cherokee. I had the Jeep for about a year ( original owner) when it threw an evac code replaced the gas cap and still didn't fix the problem. To pass an emissions test here the engine light can not be on. In the past i have just disconnected the battery to reset the cpu. When i did this yesterday for my test the guy said that because i reset the computer the test failed because the sensors dont register until you drive 70 miles. So today being the 31st im scrambbleing to get this done. I am thinking about getting a scanner to clear the code to turn the light off. Ive been looking for any problems in the evac but can't find any. Should i buy a scanner or does any body else have any ideas. Thanks a ton.. P.S. screw those washington bastards who pass the stupidist emission laws known to man. I cant wait to get my 71 chevy on the road with exhaust cut outs to show them some emissions.

you can "borrow" a scanner from any Auto-zone, they will check your code for free and sell you the parts you need . good luck

There is a fairly common problem with the newer XJs and the small rubber hose on the Evac system. I will try to find the thread that walks through the $1 fix for this problem.

balloo93 thanks for the link. This morning im going to check the whole evac system and canister. I'll be sure to let you know how it turns out. Apparently my brothers 98 Wrangler just threw the same code. Before you know it I'll be an evac specialist.

Do you know the code being thrown? If not find a code reader on sale or go to autozone and post the code they tell you!!

OK i bought a scanner for $100. I looked and looked and couldn't find anything wrong with cracked lines or fittings or anything. I broke down and took it to a mechanic for the smoke test ($127) He fixed tyhe leak for free. Thanks for all the help and keep on wheelin!

No kidding - that's like a bad ending to a date that was going well.
