Stuck in Part Time

Alright guys, just when I thought that I was on top of the world and everything was working perfectly, I discovered that I can no longer shift into 2wd (I stay in Full-Time year round) without getting stuck FOREVER in Part-Time.

The agonizing part of it is that the XJ will go into a sort of 3wd mode (locker?) where you must have the wheel about 15 degrees to the left to stay from going off the road. After pulling into a parking lot and going back and forth 5 million times, I was finally able to successfully get back into Full-Time. No problems while in there whatsoever.

My question is. . .

WTF IS WRONG? Could this be a simple thing such as the selector needing adjustment, or is the problem in the front axle or transfer case itself. I have a '96 so I don't believe I have the vacuum disconnect, but honestly, I've never checked.

It has about 97,000 miles on it, most of those spent in Full-Time 4Wd.

Grrrrrrrr I really want to fix this so I can do some intense peel-outs on demand

Thanks in advance,

Peter

Are any of the linkages underneath bent?

Just a guess...

When was that last time you changed the ATF in the t-case. Maybe its dried up and won't allow it to shift. Just another guess???

Good Question. . . I wouldn't know exactly what to check or how I'm supposed to know if it's bent, but I could take a look. I don't recall any situation where it landed or hit something in a way that could have bent something.

Right now I am thinking maybe just the selector is out of adjustment - ie. the shifter is not moving far enough forward to fully disengage from PT to 2wd. (Except I don't know if that would explain why it is so difficult to go from PT to Full Time).

BTW, I have done absolutely nothing to modify the driveline; no lifts, axle mods etc, and it has no difficulty going from 4lo to Full Time. I will check the fluid too.

Thanks your for your replies.

Ok, now I definately think that the shifter is out of adjustment because there isn't anything else I can find wrong. I remember reading a few weeks ago on here about how to realign the shifter properly but I can't find that thread. Can someone refresh my memory please?

Thank You very much,

Peter
