Stuck in Four Wheel Drive

My jeep is getting stuck in four wheel drive. After it sits for about thirty minutes with the lever in two wheel drive position then it will actually go in to two wheel drive. The lever moves freely it just does not cause it to disengage the four wheel drive. Any thoughts on this? Could it be a vacuum issue?

Well from experience I know that the best thing to do for the cases sake is to back up if you take it out of 4wd, I always do it or I dont take it out tell I can back up, just a few feet and you will hear or feel it pop out of 4wd

Give it a shot, Good luck

Well the jeep does to, but it is beyond that. Just puts the front end out when you back it up

i shift in to 4wd doing 40, but I take it out stopped and then back up

NOTE: ONLY shift into 4lo, stopped and in N

Even if the vac. disco isn't working properly the TC is what activates/disengages the front driveshaft. Make sure the lever is all the way down and try backing up. If that dosn't do it, check the linkage on your TC.

Backing it up is the first thing I tried. It did not work. I have had other four by fours which needed you to do that but it is not helping here.

I have the transfer case that has the part time mode, full time mode, and the low range. I put it in full time mode and then when I try to go back to two wheel mode it is getting stuck in part time.

That would be the 242 "full time 4wd" transfer case then. Most have the 231 "part time 4wd" case

Try gunning the throttle and backing off, that usually does it with mine. You may need to do it a couple of times.

When I got my Cherokee, it had never been used in 4wd, and when switching between FT and 2wd it also used to get stuck for quite a while, now it shifts quickly.
