Mine was the same way. I replaced almost the entire cooling system before I realized it was the stupid gauge.

I'm not retarded, the sending unit was one of the first things I replaced.

Yeah, gutting the cat is always the best bet. Who cares about the environment or emmissons tesing.

I was 22 young and dumb. I have since learned the error of my ways and put a new cat on when I do exhaust work. When I bought my 88 XJ it had no exhaust on it and received a brand new factory type exhaust from manifold to rear bumper. In a couple months my 92 will be getting the same treatment to replace the rusty setup that's on there now.

BTW - Wisconsin doesn't have emission testing, but the Jeep was designed to run with a cat so one will go on.
